Every woman should be getting a 3D Mammogram.
3D mammography uses advanced computer imaging to convert digital images of the breast into a stack of very thin layers or “slices,” building a three-dimensional reconstruction of the breast that is much clearer to read. This is especially important for women with dense breast tissue.
During this process, data from the section of the breast we are most concerned about is displayed with exceptional clarity. Areas of masses and distortion become more evident and are no longer hidden by the overlapping tissue found above and below.
A helpful analogy for understanding 3D mammography is thinking of these retrieved images as the assembled pages in a book. If you look at a closed book, you can only see the cover rather than all of the pages in between — but when you open it up, you can flip through the entire book page by page to see everything in great detail.
Montclair Breast Center was the first facility in our area to adopt the groundbreaking 3D technology.
Why do I need a 3D Mammography exam?
Simply stated: it’s a more accurate way to screen for breast cancer. The quality of the machine, and even more importantly, the person reading the images, make a difference! At Montclair Breast Center, we believe it’s time to improve the entire mammography experience. New gentle, rounded edges reduce discomfort. Soft armrests have replaced hand grips, and patients can lean comfortably on the armrests relaxing their muscles to simplify compression and image acquisition. (Anxious patients are more prone to moving and contracting muscles.) By making patients more comfortable, technologists can focus more on suitable positioning, enabling a faster and smoother experience. Specialized paddles can tilt and adapt to each womens body, breast size or breast implants.
3D Mammography delivers a series of detailed breast images, allowing your doctor to better evaluate your breasts layer by layer. Over 100 clinical studies have shown that by using this technology, doctors are able to screen for breast cancer with much greater accuracy–regardless of a woman’s age or breast density. Greater accuracy means better breast cancer detection and a reduced chance of needing additional tests.
At Montclair Breast Center, we combine the experience of fellowship-trained breast imagers with the latest 3D digital mammography to better serve our patients’ needs. 3D mammography delivers an unimaginable clarity and certainty to our physicians. 3D mammography promises to decrease the number of our patients selected for biopsy, and most importantly — increase our ability to detect breast cancer at the earliest and most treatable stage.
How quickly will I receive results?
We provide same-day results and any additional testing required can be completed immediately.
Our imagers are fellowship trained, technology-driven experts who focus solely on breasts. Multiple studies prove that radiologists specializing in reading mammograms find smaller breast cancers.
